光遗传学是一个蓬勃发展的多学科生物工程技术,结合了重组DNA技术与光学技术,对细胞生物学的研究非常有用,具有独特的高时空分辨率和细胞类型特异性的特点,克服了传统手段控制细胞或有机体活动的许多缺点。光遗传学被广泛应用于活细胞内目标蛋白质的跟踪以及选择性地控制脑中某类细胞的特定的神经活动从而推动了神经科学研究的深入。近来光遗传学的应用拓展到了信号传导的研究,也开始有医学临床的应用的报道。
神经学是神经系统的科学研究,是一门跨学科的科学,与其他领域如化学、计算机科学、工程学、语言学、数学、医学、遗传学、哲学、物理学和心理学均有关联。一些基于光学方法的研究技术已成为神经科学领域的主要研究手段。神经科学的研究范围非常广泛,包括神经系统的功能、节后、发育、遗传和病理学等方面,而其中对功能、结构及功能与结构关联的研究更是核心内容。在对神经系统结构的研究中,不断进步的光学成像技术一直发挥着重要作用。
